Abstract

The European Commission adopted a proposal for a new Directive to protect groundwater from pollution on 19th September 2003 (COM(2003)550). Based on an EU-wide approach, the proposed Directive introduces, for the first time, quality objectives, obliging Member States to monitor and assess groundwater quality on the basis of common criteria and to identify and reverse trends in groundwater pollution.
