Abstract

The film « Water, mirror of the Andean world » directed by Luc Bazin (ARIS Films Montpellier) in collaboration with Thierry Ruf (IRD) and produced by IRD (Institut de Recherches pour le Développement, France) has won the 1st Prize ex-aequo for documentary films at the 4th World Water Forum, in Mexico (March 2006). The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday 21st of March with the presence of the Chairman of the Mexican National Water Commission, the representative of IRD in Mexico and other officials of the Water and Film festival, including the Secretary of the Water Academy (France). This prize was awarded from among a wide selection (100 films in competition), thus demonstrating that the World Water Forum is taking into account the social and
cultural dimension of water management, and integrating local actor positions, particularly with respect to water rights and privatisation issues. The film explains how farmers communities affirm their own control over water
resources that have been managed through many generations, but also explains the complexity of water repartition and the current limitations of land and water sharing patterns, with the risks of seeing Andean populations leaving agriculture in favour of international migration which is frought with risk.
